Memories and thoughts come at the oddest times,

I could be talking to friends,

Driving home through afternoon traffic,

Or listening to treasured music,

And the face of someone

No longer by my side

Comes to me.

 

Their names flash through my mind,

A particular occasion,

A shared laugh or tear,

A favorite haunt,

Accompany them.

 

Melancholy and joy war within me,

Sad for their absence,

And joy for their memories.

A boon companion of old school daze,

We once said we would haunt California,

Then we took different paths,

Now we may pass each other as strangers,

If ever we meet on the street.

First love,

Bittersweet was our parting,

I too little changed,

She growing away from me.

Many a night of revelry,

Solemn discussions of girlfriends,

Life and death.

A man who stood by me,

As I wed my wife.

Now I know not where he stands.

Lover of life and family,

Away from from home and hearth,

He became my family.

His life and death are never far from my thoughts.

Our love of the arts and music,

Fueled our search for enlightenment.
